Physics 132: Spring 2018

Introduction

Physics 132 is the second semester of the two semester introduction to "Classical Physics" and electomagnetism. The course covers the subjects required for students majoring in physical science and engineering and is calculus based. There is a lecture and a recitation. The course will review mathematical techniques as they are used, including calculus and vectors, however students should have completed, or be concurrently enrolled in MAT 132.

The text is Physics for Scientists and Engineers by Giancoli, (Pearson Prentice Hall). We will be following edition 4, however, all problems will be assigned on the web, so you may use edition 3. You should purchase the homework access code at the same time you buy the text, but it can also be purchased on line.

Homework will be assigned using www.masteringphysics.com. You should purchase the access code at the same time you buy your text book. The course code is SBUPHY132SPRING18MCGREW, and the assignments will become available when class begins. The homework is due at midnight on Sunday, and the first homework assignment is due at the beginning of the second week. You must enter your SBU student number for your ID number to get credit for the homework assignments.

There will be one or two "clicker" quizes (worth 10% of the course grade) during each lecture. You will need your clicker, and cannot share with another student. Each student must provide their own answers, and providing answers for another student will be treated as cheating for everybody involved.

The Course Calendar gives the expected schedule for lecture topics, homework assignments, and exams. Also check the syllabus which lists the specific requirements that must be met to succeed in this class.
